Really Easy Tomato Sauce

A simple Italian style tomato sauce which can be served as a sauce in its own right or used in many dishes.

  • 1 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil
  • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 400 g can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée (tomato paste)
  • 2 tsp mixed dried herbs
  • salt and pepper, to taste


  • Heat the oil in a saucepan and gently cook the onions for 5-10 minutes until softened and translucent. 
  • Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the tomatoes and bring to simmering point.
  • Add the tomato purée and mixed herbs. Simmer gently for at least 15 minutes. Season to taste and use as required
